Sailing Anarchy's own Scot Tempesta took an in-depth tour of this boat while it was still on the West Coast. While there have been some minor updates and changes since the video was filmed, the boat remains largely the same as shown in the footage. This detailed tour offers a unique glimpse into the boat’s customizations and capabilities, showcasing the features that make it a true competitor in the Pacific Cup and other offshore races.
The Captain is a 1982 Hobie 33, designed by the legendary Hobie Alter and Phil Edwards. The original owners enlisted top designer Alan Andrews and renowned builder Dennis Choate to create the ultimate Hobie 33. After two years of meticulous fine-tuning and custom work under Choate’s expertise, Captain Sluggo emerged as the vessel we know today. The boat was then sailed up and down the West Coast under its original ownership before being sold to Scot Tempesta. After a short time in his hands, it was passed to a lady in New Jersey, where it sat idle for two years before I purchased it.
